Carl Porter Obituary

Carl I. Porter, age 85, longtime resident of Darling Road, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 following a recent hospitalization.

Carl was born in Tioga, NY, a son of the late Wayne and Harriet (Drake) Porter.   He joined the US Army in 1956, serving in the 538th Engineer Battalion. Upon discharge he moved to the local area and resided for most of his life in the Lodi and Interlaken areas. He had a long career at Willard Psychiatric Center, retiring as a Secure Care Aide.  He married his wife, Kathy Berry in 1972.   After retirement, they enjoyed traveling to Ocala, FL for the winters in their fifth wheel camper. Weekly card parties with friends were a must as well the occasional casino trip.  He loved to visit the local diner and have a cup of coffee and get the latest scoop.  He also never missed an episode of his favorite soaps on TV.  He enjoyed painting, “puttering’ in his garage and cruising around on his golf cart visiting neighbors, patrolling the property or getting into whatever trouble he could.  His true passion was for hunting white tail deer, turkeys and fishing.

Carl is best known for his quick wit and filterless humor.  He never felt you should take life too seriously.  You were always guaranteed a laugh if Carl was there.  That sense of humor is one of the things he will be missed for the most.

Carl is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathy; his children, Carl (Bev) Porter Jr. of Knoxville, TN, Corrine (David) Barrett of Scoharie, NY, Laurie (Carl) Hartford of Canton, PA, Jason Porter of Waverly, NY and Todd (Jen) Porter of Interlaken; a sister, Shirley Cornish of Seneca Falls and stepsons, David (Melanie) Post of Ovid and Jeffrey (Joanne) Post of North Carolina, several grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Albert, Robert and Richard Porter and Irene Jodiet.

At Carl’s request, a graveside service will be held privately at Ovid Union Cemetery in May. Kindly consider a donation in Carl’s memory to the cemetery by mailing to PO Box 175, Ovid, NY 14521.
