Jason C. Tripp, age 38, died unexpectedly on April 12, 2016.
Jason was born in Ithaca on August 25, 1977, one of two sons born to Barry F. and Bonnie (Hymes) Tripp. He graduated from Ithaca High School, and had recently been accepted into the nursing program at TC3. He had various jobs throughout the Ithaca area, but by far, he was most proud of his time at Integrity Towers of Owego, where he was the site supervisor for the construction of cell phone towers.
Whether scrambling over rocks, playing spirited games of hide and seek, or riding roller coasters, Jason felt the most joy when he was with the kids he loved; Haley, Isaac, Kayleigh, and Azalea. Jason's gentleness and intuition shone through with creatures of all sizes. He took spiders safely outside, and would often drop down to snuggle or tumble with a puppy on the street.
Jason was funny, sarcastic, and irreverent, but always kind. He had great compassion and an ability to see past the trivial details of someone's life into what really mattered. He had friends of all ages and from all walks of life. He often said that what he liked most about attending recovery meetings was the closeness it was possible to cultivate with a diverse group of people. He brought hope, support, and fellowship to many people in those meetings, and felt great gratitude for receiving the same in return.
Jason was a talented writer and an inquisitive, insightful student. He delved into issues of social justice and spoke out against wrongs and abuses he saw around him. He was eager to help when needed, and volunteered his time to the recovery community. He was widely trusted and a friend to many.
Ultimately, despite valiantly and victoriously fighting a grade 3 brain tumor, Jason succumbed to a much stronger disease--that of addiction. Jason wasn't ready to leave this world and his loved ones in it. However, his family and close friends, who loved and fiercely supported him, find immense comfort in knowing that his suffering has ceased. He positively impacted the lives of so many during his time here, and he will be dearly missed.
Jason is survived by his father, Barry (Joyce) Tripp of Ovid; his mother, Bonnie Caldwell of Interlaken; his children, Isaac and Haley Tripp of Mayville, NY; a sister, Lyndsay (Shawn) Caldwell and her daughter, Kayleigh Banfield, of Interlaken; his step brother and sister, Wayne Andrews of Willard and Bobbi Hebert of Lodi; his longtime friend and confidant, Draya Koschmann and her daughter, Azalea Sears, of Ithaca, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Derek Tripp in 2007, by his step-father, Bruce in 2006, and by his step-mother, Gloria in 2011.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Ithaca Friends Meeting House, 120 3rd Street, Ithaca NY, 14850--an opportunity for friends, family and members of the recovery community to share the positive impact and happy memories that Jason had on all of their lives. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to Ithaca Community Recovery, Inc., 518 W. Seneca Street, Ithaca, NY 14850
