David E. Terry Sr.

DAVID E. TERRY Sr., age 74, lifelong resident and mayor of Ovid, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.

David was born on December 20, 1942 in Seneca Falls, a son of the late Earl Stout and Beatrice (Doane) Terry. He graduated from Ovid Central School in 1960, and obtained his Associates Degree in Horticultural Sciences from Alfred State University in 1962. David enjoyed a long career at the New York State Experimental Station of Cornell University, where he worked as a research assistant. He was married to Margie Carpenter on March 17, 1962, and together they owned and operated the Ovid Laundromat on Main Street for 22 years. David was a 4-H leader, and an avid bowler in his early years, and then his focus was directed to his growing family. Perhaps one of his most significant contributions to his community was that of his dedication to the Ovid Fire Department. Joining in 1970, he was an active fireman for many years, and then moved to the corporate side of the department where he served as treasurer for decades. In 2008, he became the Mayor of Ovid, and once again, his lifelong commitment to Ovid was evidenced by his daily operation of the Village. Never one to boast of his accomplishments, his greatest of all was that of his family, for which he was proud to share in their daily lives and offer his support and guidance.

He is survived by his loving children, Michael (Suzanne) Terry of Charlotte, NC, David E. (Kelly) Terry Jr. of Interlaken, Kelley Smith of Georgetown, Grand Cayman Island and his adoring grandchildren, Cormac, Nolan, Nicholas, Grace and Kaitlyn; his siblings, Betty Baker of Interlaken, James (Patricia) Terry of Lawton, OK and Bea (Joe) Marrone of Ovid, in addition, his wife❜s extended family and a host of nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his wife, Margie in 2001 and by a daughter, Robyn in 1968.

Services for David will be held privately, however he will be memorialized at the 2018 Ovid Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 16, 2018.
