Earl L. Hayward, age 75, longtime resident of 2027 West Seneca Street, died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.
The family will receive friends at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid from 10:00am to Noon on Saturday, April 8, 2023. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to the Interlaken Sportsmen’s Club, PO Box 512, Interlaken, NY 14847 in Earl’s memory.
Earl was born in Ithaca on June 23, 1947, a son of Arthur L. and Henrietta (nee Sarsfield) Hayward. He was a 1966 graduate of Interlaken High School, and then served his country in the US Navy from 1966 to 1970, where he was wounded in battle in Vietnam, receiving the Purple Heart Medal. He then worked at Seneca Army Depot as a security officer and then as a demolition specialist, retiring when the depot closed. Earl was an avid outdoorsman and proud American, he had a close circle of friends and a loving family.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Armitage of Lodi; his grandsons, Liam and Lance Armitage; his father, Arthur L. Hayward of Port St. Lucie, FL; his siblings, Jerald (Ruth) Hayward of Waterloo, Shirley Simmons of Ovid, Tom (Pamela) Hayward of Interlaken, Vern Hayward of Drexel, NC, Nancy (Skip) Jacot of Lodi, and Larry “Tim” Hayward of Cuba, NY; a step-daughter, Tina (Rob) Ziegler of Warsaw, NY and a very large extended family. Earl was preceded in death by his wife, of 44 years, Patsy in 2017 and by his mother.
