Harry G. Hayes, age 74, lifetime resident of Lodi, died on Thursday (Jan 9th) at Bayonet Point Medical Center in Hudson, FL, following a brief illness.

A graveside service will be held at West Lodi Cemetery at a future date, to be announced by Covert Funeral Home of Ovid. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Harry’s memory to the South Seneca Ambulance Corps, PO Box 280, Ovid, NY 14521 or the charity of one’s choice.

Harry was born in Lodi, NY on October 26, 1939, a son of the late John F. and Gladys (Conklin) Hayes. He was a 1957 graduate of the Ovid Central School and had a long career at Willard Psychiatric Center, retiring as a supervisor of plumbers and steamfitters. He was an avid hunter and golfer. Summer months Harry was devoted to his vegetable garden and those close to him can testify to what a great cook he was.

He married Roberta Drake on September 4, 1959. Following their retirement, they wintered in Hudson, FL at a senior community where they made a number of very close friends. He was preceded in death by Roberta in 2009, after 49 years of marriage.

Harry is survived by a son, Grant (April) Hayes of South Charleston, WV; his grandchildren, Tara (Rodney) Robinson, Scott M. (Tara) Smith, Davey and Kellie Hayes; and great grandchildren, Leah Robinson, Madison Krick, Nathan and Aaron Smith; sisters, Millie Boyd of Las Vegas, NV and Betty Austin of Ithaca and a brother, Don Hayes of Maryland, his companion, BettieLu Doan of Hudson, FL, his former son in law; Scott (Joan Hendrix) Smith of Interlaken, and a large extended family to include nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers in law. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Sheree Smith and Kristin Swain, and by his siblings, Helen, Ellen, Shirley, John, Dave, Dick, Harold, Frank and Jerry.
