Nancy J. Matteson, age 69, of Wyers Point Road, died on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Geneva General Hospital.
A time of remembrance and sharing will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the Ovid Fire Department, 2136 Brown Street. An opening prayer and words of comfort will be offered at 4:00pm by Rev. Rob Mellgard, (OFD Chaplain) of the Ovid Federated Church. Nancy was born on August 25, 1948 in Rochester, NY, a daughter of the late James Earl and Clarissa (Almina) Matteson. She had worked as a clerk at Willard Drug Treatment Center and Five Points Correctional Facility. Following her retirement she was working at the Seneca County Law Enforcement Center. Nancy❜s passion was the Ovid Fire Department, she was the first woman firefighter, and had been the safety officer for the department. She was the official driver of the 1932 Ford Fire Truck, which she drove in many local parades and events. Her commitment to the department was unparalleled. In addition, she had been a member of the American Legion Post #463 Auxiliary, to which she committed many volunteer hours.
She is survived by her children; James Edington of Charleston, SC, Jenny (Peter) DiStefano of Enfield, and Roy Mitchell of Edgewater, FL, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, her siblings; Mary Kreyer of TN, Kenny Matteson of Marion, Louise Breemes of Palmyra, Joyce Wilcox of Phelps and Steven Matteson of Clifton Springs, along with a large extended family.
