John J. Hakes, age 62, resident of Ann Street, died at Strong Memorial Hospital on March 16, 2025, following a year long illness and extended rehabilitation and hospitalization.

John was born in Kenmore, NY on December 1, 1962, the son of the late Allen C. and JoRetha (nee Bates) Hakes. He had a lifelong history as a mechanic and handyman. John had a passion for information about hot rod cars and could talk for hours about them. He enjoyed family outings and was known for watching MotorTrend 24/7 when home. John was the house chef; he cooked and baked 360/365 days in a year and dined out when he could. He was well known for being the food critic of the house and would tell you how to make the food taste better. John had most recently worked as the Floor Crew Chief at Wegman’s in Geneva, until a back injury forced his early retirement. John will be forever known for his “Dad Jokes” and congenial personality and the wiliness to give a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Sue Hakes; his children, Cathy S. (Harry) McLoud of Ovid, and Jeremy (aka BilliJon K.) Hakes of Ovid; his grandchildren, Jacob Mead, Tristian McLoud and Domonic Delgado along with several great grandchildren; and his sister, Darlene (Dave) Bennett of Tennessee.

A graveside service will be held in private at Ovid Union Cemetery in Ovid.
