M. Shoemaker Adele

d. February 18, 2017

Adele M. Shoemaker, age 82, formerly of Trumansburg and Ithaca, died on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Beechtree Center in Ithaca.

Adele was born in Akron, Ohio on December 18, 1934, the only daughter of James H. and Madeline (Layes) Bishop. She worked for Mohawk Airlines for 14 years, living in Hawaii. It was on Hawaii that she learned physical therapy skills and took hula lessons. She moved to New York, where she met her husband and had an instant family, taking on the household of Gerald Shoemaker and his 4 children. They raised Appaloosa horses and she genuinely loved their farm. She cared for her elderly mother and became a CNA, while working at the Reconstruction Home in Ithaca. Adele was paralyzed from reaction to a flu shot, and she rehabilitated herself from the skills learned in Hawaii, and went on to work for many more years, retiring from the Reconstruction Home at the age of 60. She then cared for and helped to rehabilitate stroke victims as a personal home health aide. She was a member of the West Hill Community Church. She is survived by her church family and several close friends.

There will be a graveside service at 2:00pm on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Jones Cemetery on Boyd Hill Road in Trumansburg.
