Velma M. Maguire, age 98, formerly of Water Street in Ovid, died at Seneca Nursing & Rehab Center in Waterloo on Monday, January 20, 2014.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am to Noon on Thursday (Jan 23rd) at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 South Main Street in Ovid. A funeral service will then follow at Noon on Thursday, officiated by Rev. Diane Walker of the Ovid Federated Church. Prayers of committal will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in the Spring. As a cancer survivor, Velma requested that any memorial contributions in her memory, be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1400 N.Winton Road, Rochester, NY 14609.
Velma was born in Gold, Potter County, Pennsylvania on February 21, 1915, the eldest of eight children to Chester O. and Rose E. (Warner) Miles. She graduated from Elkland High School in PA. She worked at Sampson Hospital, transferred to the Army Base in Rome, NY and subsequently retired from Seneca Army Depot as a communication operator. She had graduated from communications school and had Top Secret Military Clearance. She had lived in Ovid since 1953, and had been a member of both the Varick UMC and the Ovid Federated Church, in addition to the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #463. Velma was an avid cat lover, and played a large role in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Harry (Mary) Davenport of Zephyrhills, FL, and a son in law, Leonard Coon of Rome, NY; her sisters, Mable Rosky of Spring Hill, FL and Eleanor Kellogg of Horseheads and numerous grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Maguire; a son, Hugh Davenport; a daughter, Esther Coon; her siblings, Russell, Clarence, Keith, Joseph and Kathy Mannix.
