Calvin N. Champion age 77, of 8913 State Route 414, died at the home of his daughter in Willard on Sunday, January 05, 2014, following a recent cancer diagnosis.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Wednesday, (Jan 8th) at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 South Main Street in Ovid. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Diane Walker of the Ovid Federated Church, will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, (Jan 9th) at the funeral home. A reception will be hosted at the Interlaken Sportsmen’s Club following the service. Prayers of committal with Military Honors will be held at Lake View Cemetery in the Spring. Calvin was born in Logan, NY on April 5, 1936, a son of the late Harold and Dorothy (Bennett) Champion. He attended both Lodi and Interlaken Schools, and then joined the US Air Force, through Sampson AFB, proudly serving his country for 4 years. Upon his return, he worked at Sampson State Hospital until it’s closure, and then enjoyed a long career at Willard Psychiatric Center as a therapy aide. In total, he had over 31 years of state service. Calvin was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying trap shooting, hunting and fishing with his buddies through the Interlaken Sportsmen’s Club. He was also a great baseball fan. He travelled his route every day, checking on various friends and family members, taking time along the way to visit and catch up on the daily news.

He is survived by his children; David (Jill Ayers) Champion of Interlaken, Brenda (Paul) McGuane and Keith (Melanie) Champion, all of Willard, his grandchildren; April (Steve) Twarkins of Arizona, Michalla Champion of Interlaken, Michael Church, Monica (Jonathan) Siccardi all of Willard, Joshua McGuane of Interlaken, Nicole Hecker of Trumansburg, Elizabeth Hecker of Canandaigua and Anna Champion of Willard and 9 great grandchildren, his siblings; Robert (Dorothy) Champion of Lodi, Lester (Sharon) Champion of Elmira, Ralph (Barb) Champion Of Lodi, Elma Updike of Interlaken, Bonnie (Brent) Ward of Interlaken and Marge MacCheyne of Ovid; his sister in law, Pearl Champion, many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Beeman, and brothers, Jack and Harold, in addition to his “Love”, the mother of his children, Martha Brennan.
