Robert N. "Bob" Bates, age 80, resident of Verona Village, passed away at his home on Friday, October 20, 2017.
A celebration of Bob❜s life will be held at American Legion Post #463 in Ovid on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 1 to 3pm, where family and friends are invited to share stories of Bob❜s colorful life. Future interment will be held at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Robert was born on November 30, 1936, in Jamaica, Long Island, NY, a son of the late William and Esther (Nelson) Bates. He graduated from Interlaken High School and proudly served his country in the US Army. He had worked many jobs in the transportation industry, including owner/operator of ROLO Trucking. His last employer was Citrus World of Lake Wales, FL. He had been a Mason in the Farmerville Union Lodge of Interlaken. Not only did Bob go by many nicknames, ‶Batesy, Chirpy, Wrong Way Bob, Pimpy″ but his stories were just as funny. He loved his family and friends and took every opportunity to make people laugh.
He is survived by his children; Robert ‶Bobby″ (Barbra) Bates of Clermont, FL Lori (Marvin) Morton of Ovid, Lisa (Friedrich) Sauber of Weinstein, Germany, and Rodney Bates of Tampa, FL; his grandchildren, James, Carla, and Marcia Morton, Jessica Rappleye, Jenny and Cedric Sauber, Taylor Larry, Nicki, Lizzy, Harley, and Charlie Bates; his great grandchildren, Kloe, Gavin, Sebastian, Stella, Lily and a brother, William (Kathy) Bates of Tonawanda. Bob was preceded in death by his step sister Shirley Grant and step brother, Dale Weidmeir.
