William P. ″Bill″ Warne, age 79, of 6950 State Route 96A, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2015 while on respite at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00am on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 So. Main Street in Ovid. A Memorial Service will then follow at 11:00am, officiated by Rev. Leslie Adams of Christ Church in Willard. Prayers of committal with military honors will be held at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Bill was born on May 8, 1936 in Waterloo, a son of the late Paul S. and Helen M. (Chamberlin) Warne. He graduated from Ovid Central School in 1953, and proudly served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. Following his discharge, he worked at Seneca Army Depot, retiring as the Chief of Flight Operations. While at the Depot, he was also trained as an engineer to operate 50, 90, 130 ton locomotives. Upon retirement, he worked at the Ovid Liquor Store and WalMart in the sporting goods department. Bill was a devout Episcopalian, and had served as a liturgical lay minister at Grace Willowdale and Christ Church in Willard.
Bill was very proud of his military service, and supported many veterans organizations, in addition to being a life member of the American Legion Post 463 in Ovid and the NRA. He was ‶plank owner″ of the USS Kitty Hawk and was on board for it❜s commissioning, and a long time volunteer at the Sampson Museum. Bill was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed his retirement by fishing, hunting and birdwatching. He was a guest writer and speaker for the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, in addition to many other local and regional publications. Bill was nostalgic and sentimental, he was honored to live in the home built by his parents.
He is survived by his sons, Tim (Terri) Warne of Willard, Randy (Gloria) Warne of Romulus; grandchildren, Billy, Brandon, Rhonda, Little G, Katie, Timmy and Shannon and their families; his uncle, Pete (Doris) Warne of Penn Yan and several cousins. Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Warne.
