Marty was born on April 28, 1935 at home in Throop, Pennsylvania to Martin P. and Jean David. The eldest of two, he grew up in coal mining country, on the banks of the Susquehanna River. An active child, he loved swimming, ice skating, playing by the river, always looking out for his little sister. He was raised by a large extended Polish-American family and had a loving childhood, rich with tradition and Old-World values. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for four years, then joined the United States Army as a career soldier. After a tour in Korea, Marty was stationed at the Seneca Army Depot where he met and married the love of his life, Judy Cusimano, on January 19, 1963. The newlyweds travelled extensively throughout his service career and then after being wounded during Vietnam, he received the Purple Heart, he then served another tour in Korea before retiring as Sergeant First Class. He settled down in Lodi to raise his family, continuing to work at the Army Depot under civilian status, until he retired upon the closing of the base.
Marty was a loving, social, community oriented man. His love of family and his country was always evident and will be forever missed. He always had a place in his heart for animals, taking in strays and giving them a life-long home. He was a member of the Lodi Volunteer Fire Company, serving as treasurer/secretary for over 30 years, Lodi tax-collector, Village trustee, and member of the American Legion and VFW Posts in Ovid. He loved being busy and on the go, stopping to visit with people wherever he went. He enjoyed trips to the casinos, travels to the Jersey shore, and watching the NY Yankees.
Marty is survived in great sorrow by his wife of 54 years, Judy David; children Joann, Jeffrey (Daisy), and Jason David; grandchildren, Ian Buchanan, Ben Zehr, Kiarah, Allie, Barrett, and Brody David; and his extended grandchildren, Owen, Keaton, Keziah, Kempton, and Kalo; brothers in law, Don (Wanda) Cusimano, Rich, Ed, and Bruce (Clara) Walborn and their families; and beloved Snuggles. In addition to his parents, Marty was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Tedesco.
The family asks those that would like to make a contribution in Marty❜s memory to kindly consider the Lodi Fire Department, PO Box 299, Lodi, NY 14860 or the Beverly Animal Shelter, 50 E. River Street, Waterloo, NY 13165.
