Command Sergeant Major George W. Artley, USA, Retired, age 79, longtime resident of Water Street, passed away at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse on Thursday, December 27, 2018.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Thursday, January 3, 2018 at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Les Moore of Wellspring Church in Clifton Springs, will be held at the funeral home at 11:00am on Friday, January 4, 2018. George was born in Muncy, PA on August 15, 1939, a son of the late Colonel George and Clara (Burnett) Artley, USA, Retired. His military career began one week before his 20th birthday and spanned 30 years. He traveled the world and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and peace time, receiving extensive training from the US Army in in ammunitions and hazardous materials handling. A Master Nuclear Instructor, and Member of the Thule Greenland Nuclear recovery team. He served as post Command Sergeant Major at Seneca Army Depot from 1986-1989. George was the bar steward of VFW Post 6200 for more than 20 years, and also served as the Post Commander for multiple terms. As the captain of the Ovid Color Guard, George dutifully provided dignified ceremonies for countless numbers of deceased veterans throughout the Finger Lakes Region. He was Commander for the 8th District of the VFW and was currently the state historian. In addition, George was a member and treasurer of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (DG Caywood Camp in Ovid), while also maintaining membership in American Legion Post #463 in Ovid. George was always surrounded by his loving family and sought to serve his fellow servicemen and women in any capacity that he could. His contributions to his family and his comrades will be remembered for generations.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Emily; his children, Major Francisco (Shawn) Artley, USA, Retired, Clara Artley of Ovid, George P. (Sandijo) Artley of Willard and William L. Artley of DC, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Georgia Lee (Herbert) Meyers of Montoursville, PA and a large extended family. George was preceded in death by his parents George and Clara Artley, first wife wife, Catherine Shanley NM.
