Richard A. “Dick” Ferris, age 69, longtime resident of County Road 138, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Geneva General Hospital on Monday, January 15, 2024 following complications from recent cancer treatments.
Dick was born in Ithaca, NY on April 17, 1954, a son of the late Harold and Bertha (nee DeLong) Ferris. He attended Interlaken Schools and had owned and operated Ferris Farms for decades. He brokered hay & straw and trucked them all over the country, along the way meeting many longtime friends and colleagues. He was also a renowned mechanic and welder, as well as an “agricultural engineer.” If he needed something and couldn’t find it, he’d build it! He had a soft spot for any “castaway” animal, from one-eyed cows, to howling dogs to rabbits, any injured or overlooked animal always had a home at Dick’s Funny Farm.
He is survived by his children; Richard Covert of Trumansburg and Jennifer (Butch) Carroll of Willard; his grandchildren, Jordan (Elayna) Lapoint, Paige LaPoint and Mya Carroll, and a great granddaughter, Theodora. Siblings, Kenneth (Sue) Ferris of Georgia and Linda Zakrewski of Ontario, NY and a large extended family.
At Dick’s request, there will be no formal services. A celebration of his life with cold PBR and a cook-out BBQ will be announced by his family at a later date. Kindly consider a donation in Dick’s memory to Beverly Animal Shelter, 50 East River Street, Waterloo, NY 13165 or www.beverlyanimalshelter.com
