Ronald E. Slate

Ronald E. Slate, age 75, of Smith Vineyard Road, Romulus, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 5, 2019.

Ron was born in Candor, NY on November 20, 1943, the only son of the late Earl and Mamie (Foster) Slate. He left school at a young age, and found himself in the US Army at the age of 17. Following his honorable discharge, he met and married Leorah Presher in 1964. He had worked as a truck driver for Agway for many years, which was then purchased by Ryder. He drove for more than 35 years before a cancer diagnosis forced his retirement. After remission, he continued driving, this time locally for the Amish Community, until the time of his death. Family and friends will remember him for his love of good conversation, his willingness to always offer a helping hand, and his devotion to those he loved. His presence will greatly missed.

Ron is survived by his children; Nancy Snyder of Willard, Eric (Charlotte) Slate of Ovid and his son in law, Mike Snyder of Ovid, his grandchildren; Alex, Benjamin and Jack Snyder and Daisy Slate, his stepchildren and their families; Donald (Lynn) Quick of Candor and Jean Dunham of Montour Falls. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ronalee Slate, his wife Leorah in 2017 and his two sisters.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 10th from 3:00 to 5:00pm at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 So. Main Street in Ovid. A funeral service will follow at 5:00pm at the funeral home with a reception immediately afterward at the Ovid VFW Post #6200. Prayers of committal with military honors will be held at Smith Valley Cemetery in Wilseyville on Friday. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to Beverly Animal Shelter, 50 E.
