Shirley I. Nogle, age 88, longtime resident of East Lake Road, died Saturday at Rochester General Hospital. Shirley was born in Ithaca on March 1, 1938, the only child of the late Clarence and Pauline (nee Taylor) Carson. Upon completion of high school, she began working at Willard State Hospital, she met her future husband, Joseph Nogle. They were married on September 25, 1954, and celebrated the birth of their daughter, Jo Ann on December 27, 1955. Shirley returned to work at Willard in 1966, and they purchased their farm in Fayette in 1967. Shirley retired from the food service department at Willard Psychiatric Center in 1992. Joe and Shirley continued to operate the farm until 2018. Joe and Shirley traveled extensively and have visited all 50 states.
Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter, Jo Ann in 1981, and by her husband of 66 years, Joe in 2021. She is survived by her husband’s extended family, close friends and neighbors.
The family will receive friends at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid from 10:00am to 11:00am on Friday, June 28, 2024. A funeral service officiated by Pastor Rob Mellgard will then follow at the funeral home at 11:00am. Prayers of committal will be offered at Ovid Union Cemetery.
