W. Miles Harold

d. January 12, 2017

Harold W. Miles, of 1545 County Road 132 (Main Street) passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 12, 2017 at the age of 71.

A Scripture Service will be led by Fr. Bernard Maloney of the Holy Cross Church, Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish, at 4:00pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the Covert Funeral Home in Ovid. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Harold❜s memory to Beverly Animal Shelter.

Harold was born in Waterloo, NY on December 5, 1945, the eldest son of the late Harold and Anne (Waschak) Miles. He graduated from Interlaken High School, and served his country during the Vietnam Era from 1967-1970. For the past nearly 30 years, he has been the Vineyard Operations Manager at Lucas Vineyards.

At work and at home, Harold had a keen eye for acquiring equipment others labeled unfixable and constructing his own solutions to make them run again. From the time his son and grandson could toddle around the garage, Harold had them at his side, instructing and encouraging them to be resourceful, probably never fully realizing the legacy he was building in the process. One of his last words of advice to his grandson was that a working man should never leave home without a pencil, pocketknife, marking crayon, a quarter or washer, nail clippers, and chapstick in his pocket.

When he wasn❜t working on a project, Harold was helping others, whether they were known to him or not. He was the epitome of a good samaritan and a good neighbor; always quick to lend a hand or offer equipment, purchase treats for neighborhood kids, or give a full size candy bar to children and adults alike on a cold, rainy Halloween night.

For his family and close friends, he was a man of little words with a heart of gold. If they could name only one person they could count on always, it was Harold. When needing someone to watch over a beloved pet or being faced with an emergency, he was the person to call. He was characteristically dependable, and at times, had the answer before a person even realized the problem at hand. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, sibling, and friend. To those who knew him best, the loss of his presence in their life will be immeasurable.

Harold is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy; best friend and son, Frank (April) and grandson, Logan Miles; his siblings, Patricia (Delmer) Haire of Ovid, Barbara Tokar of Ovid, and John Miles of Rochester, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Francis Miles and brother in law, Rich Tokar.
