John W. Strawway, age 75, of Spring Meadows, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, October 19, 2014.

John was born on August 29, 1939 in Syracuse, a son of the late Joe and Dorothy (Townsend) Strawway. He joined the US Army at the age of 17, and upon his return from active duty, he lived in Steuben County. He then came to work at Willard State Hospital, from where he eventually retired after many years of service. John was an avid outdoorsman, and over the years had been a member of the Interlaken, South Seneca and Lodi Sportsmen❜s Clubs and the Ovid Skydivers. John loved the Ovid community, and was a regular face at the diner, sporting goods store, a true member of the community. He believed in giving back to the community in the form of being a blood donor through the American Red Cross and a member of the Farmerville Union Free & Accepted Masonic Lodge in Interlaken.

John is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Barbara; his children, Christine Champion, Mary (Joe) Madden, Brenda (Greg) Hafer and John W. Strawway Jr., all of Steuben County; his stepchildren, Larry Sibley of Romulus, Stephen Sibley of Clyde and Karen Harris of Trumansburg, several grandchildren and great grandchildren and a sister, Joanne Zieber of Reading, Pennsylvania.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the Ovid Federated Church to commemorate John❜s life. Prayers of committal with military honors will be held at Ovid Union Cemetery.
