Roger J. Getman

March 14, 1940 — December 20, 2020

Roger J. Getman, age 80, of Gilbert Road and lifelong resident of Ovid, passed away at Geneva General Hospital on Sunday, December 20, 2020.

Roger was born in Waterloo on March 14, 1940, a son of the late Sherman and Norma (Lamb) Getman. He attended Ovid Central School and proudly served his country from 1957-1961 in the US Navy. He returned home to re-join the family business where he had been working since he was 14, Getman’s Gas Company. He worked alongside his brother, Norman “Hork” and nephew, Greg, until his retirement in 2006. Roger had a deep commitment to Ovid and the surrounding communities; he served as Ovid Town Constable, Ovid Village Police Chief, worked for the Seneca County Sheriff’s Department and volunteered for the Ovid Fire Department where he was also former chief. Roger was a member of the Ovid VFW Post #6200,  American Legion Post #463 and the South Seneca Sportsmen’s Club. From the young age of 7, Roger’s love of Cayuga Lake was proven by his boats and untold number of hours spent on the lake and time spent at the family cottage.  In his retirement, he sought out more water, and wintered in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

Roger is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barb; his sons, Steven J. and his fiancé Michelle Ormsbee of Watkins Glen, Lawrence J. and his wife, Nadia of Cupertino, CA; his grandchildren, Tatiana, Sebastian and Adriana Getman of Cupertino, CA and Rachael Weiner of NYC and Meredith Weiner of Boston; a brother, Dennis J. Getman and his wife, Lynn of Prescott, AZ and a host of nieces and nephews, to include the extended Warrick family. The family is most appreciative of the excellent care Roger received from his niece, Pam Switzer and her husband Bob, during his recent hospitalization.

In accordance with Roger’s wishes, prayers of committal with military honors will be held privately at Holy Cross cemetery at a future date.
